Keep checking your G1 only to find that you haven’t received your update yet? Wanna skip the whole waiting process and upgrade the RC29 and take things into your own hands? It’s possible, but it’s not backed officially by anyone. You’ll get no support from Google or T-Mobile on this one so be careful not to brick your phone!
The guys over at xda-dev forums have put together a step-by-step process for updating your Android handset to the latest software release. It sounds easy enough to us, but we’re not endorsing it. Also, it seems like the update process can be affected by varying SD cards.
- Download the RC29 file directly from Google.
- Rename the file to update.zip and put it in the main directory of the Micro SD card.
- Unplug your USB cable if you’ve transferred the file from your PC to the handset.
- Turn off the device. Turn it back on with by holding the Home & End keys until you the icon show up. This comes after the T-Mobile G1 image.
- From the icon screen, press Alt & L at same time.
- Press Alt & S to actually begin the update.
- After this finishes, follow the instructions and press Home & Back to end.
**Your G1will reboot a couple of times as it flashes various parts of the firmware.
