Someone at Google must be watching the Android news very closely. In the coming days, Android will see its third update to the platform, bringing the total to three in the first two weeks. This time, it’s not designed to fix a security flaw with the browser.
Earlier this week, we reported on the “jailbreak” ability within Android. Users have the capability to get root access on the device, potentially opening up the door for very low level changes to Android’s functionality or possibly porting to other devices. This is different than the jailbreak of the iPhone, where users have the ability to install any apps they want, even outside of the App Store.
We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes. – Google
Android is considered an “open” platform, perhaps the most open of all mobile operating systems. This brings up the question: Shouldn’t users have the right to choose whether or not they want the RC30 update? Aren’t they allowed to bend and twist Android however they want?
Granted, this is more of a security feature than a buzzkill. We can imagine that a very small percentage of Android owners were going to use this jailbreak anyways. it is nice to see the updates coming as fast as possible. This should help bring peace of mind to those worried about open source and/or new platforms.
