Verizon’s Droid is currently the only handset in the US to run the latest version of Android, but that will soon change. According to a Verizon Wireless spokesperson, their Droid Eris is slated to get a significant upgrade in the form of 2.0 or beyond.
“The Droid Eris currently using Android 1.5, can and will be upgraded to newer a Android operating system software in first quarter 2010. The enhancement will allow customers to continue to enjoy the powerful HTC Sense experience while also gaining the additional benefits of Google Maps Navigation.”
At $99, this was already one of the best Android bargains you can find. Combining Android 2.0’s capabilities with HTC’s Sense UI gets us all worked up! Depending on the timing, the Droid Eris could skip 2.0 and jump straight to 2.1! We’ve previously heard that HTC plans to get the Hero up to 2.0 as well. Perhaps Sprint will be the next wireless provider to offer Android 2.0 handsets.
